1 - Out of the Blue

B for Beads

An alluring cuff using memory wire, sea glass and Tibetan Silver beads. A perfect addition to your holiday jewellery!

Gather these supplies

  • 2 Memory wire bracelet coils
  • 17 30mm Silver plated eyepins
  • 36 Tibetan silver faceted saucer beads
  • 106 4mm Tibetan silver daisy spacer beads
  • 17 6mm Cobalt blue round sea glass beads
  • 30cms Silver grey organza ribbon

Here’s how
  1. Slide onto each eyepin a sea glass bead with one daisy spacer either side and loop the end. Repeat this for all 17 eyepins.
  2. Cut the memory wire if necessary so that you have two coils leaving a gap of roughly 2cm and then loop one end of each coil.
  3. Thread onto the first coil a daisy spacer, faceted saucer, daisy spacer and loop of one of the eyepins. Continue this pattern until you reach the end of the coil. Finish with a daisy spacer, faceted saucer and daisy spacer then make another small loop to finish.
  4. Repeat with the other memory wire coil, taking it through the loops on the other end of the eyepins.
  5. Thread the ribbon through the loops in the memory wire using tweezers or fine nose pliers and tie into a bow.

Here’s how
  1. Begin by turning a loop on one end of the memory wire using round nose pliers.

4 - Moody Mix Bracelet by Chloe Menage

The Bead Shop (Nottingham) Ltd

This design uses a selection of beads from a Czech glass mix to create a cheap and cheerful bracelet.

Gather these supplies
  • Selection of beads from Czech Stripey Mix Blue
  • 2 Coils of small bracelet Memory wire bright
  • 2 Cube end caps silver plated
  • Tools
  • Memory wire cutters
  • Glue

Here’s how
  1. Using memory wire cutters cut two coils of memory wire. Add a spot of glue on to one end and firmly press on an end cap. Wait until the glue is set before threading on your beads.
  2. There is a great selection of beads in this mix and it lends itself well to a random design. However I decided on a more set pattern using the cubes and saucer beads and broke up the design at random intervals with ovals from the mix. Finish with an end cap in the same way as you started.

5 - Blue Wave Bracelet by Bryony Hayter

Spellbound Bead Co

Waves of soft pre-knitted wire give soft texture to this simple memory wire bracelet.

Gather these supplies
  1. One length of one and a half turns of 6cm diameter memory wire
  2. 30cm 0.1mm blue pre-knitted wire
  3. 5 8mm Matt blue round beads (A)
  4. 5 8mm Pale blue frost round beads (B)
  5. 5 6mm Deep blue oval beads (C)
  6. 10 4mm Pewter beaded edge washers (D)
  7. 5 6mm Pressed glass pale blue bicones (E)
  8. 3g Pale blue pearl size 10 or 11 seed beads (F)
  9. 2 Silver headpins
  10. 2 Silver star beads
  11. 20cm 0.6mm Half hard silver wire

Here’s how
  1. Turn a loop on one end of the memory wire bracelet.
  2. Take the length of pre-knitted wire, and fold it along the length concertina style and then gently pull it along the length – this will make it into a more compact width which will then be woven along the length of the bracelet
  3. About 2cm from the end of the knitted wire length thread it through the depth of the fold onto the memory wire – this may look a bit messy but we will come back and finish the ends of once the bracelet has been threaded.
  4. Now thread on 2F, 1A, 2F and thread on the pre-knitted wire again, curving the length of it around one side of the beads just threaded.
  5. Thread on 2F, 1E, 2F and bring in the pre-knitted wire again, this time threading it around the beads just added on the opposite side to that threaded in (4) so that you can start to see the wave created by the wire as you thread it down the length of the memory wire.
  6. Thread on 2F, 1B, 1D, 1B, 2F followed by the knitted wire, curving around the previous beads in the same direction as in (4)
  7. Thread on 2F, 1C, 2F followed by the knitted wire, curving around the previous beads in the same direction as in (5)
  8. You have now established your bead and wire sequence.  Continue with the pattern created in steps 4 to 7 four more times, finishing with the pre-knitted wire.
  9. Leaving a gap of approx 8mm at each end of your bead sequence turn a loop in each end of the memory wire
  10. 10 Take the length of 0.6mm silver wire and carefully form a neat binding over the pre-knitted wire at the first end of the bracelet, and then trim carefully.
  11. Using the remaining 0.6mm wire bind the other end of the knitted wire onto the bracelet, trimming back both the knitted wire and the binding wire if necessary.
  12. To complete the design thread 2F, a star bead and 2F onto a headpin. Trim and loop. Attach to one end loop of the bracelet. Repeat at the other end

  • 4 Small star Murano glass beads silver sapphire
  • 6 8mm Round Murano glass beads silver sapphire
  • 6 10mm Round Murano glass beads silver sapphire

  • 21 3mm Spacer beads silver plated
  • Round nose pliers
  • Memory wire cutters

Here’s how
  1. Using memory wire cutters (not your normal flush cutters!) cut off two coils of memory wire. Cut it so the ends overlap each other by 2cm.
  2. Use round nose pliers and firmly bend one end of the wire into a P shaped loop. Keep bending it around until it starts to form a coiled loop. You will need to keep moving your pliers back up to the top to stop the top jaw from distorting the wire’s shape.
  3. Thread on the beads in a random pattern, using the 3mm and 4mm beads to space out the Murano. To finish you will need 1cm left to create a loop. Grip the tip between the pliers and create a coiled loop to finish.

13 - Stormy Seas Memory Wire Bracelet by Anna Weller

Big Bead Little Bead

Clear blue tropical seas are overshadowed by storm clouds.  The jet-black fire polished Czech rounds with AB finish reflect the colouring of the aqua beads but darken the mood.

Gather these supplies
  • 3 Loops of memory wire (standard bracelet size 60mm)
  • 6 Silver-Plated two-hole spacer bars
  • 120 Teal blue seed beads
  • 20 6mm Jet round fire polished Czech glass with AB
  • 20 8mm Aqua round fire polished Czech glass
  • 6 38mm Silver plated headpins
  • 6 6mm Silver plated jump rings

You will also need some chain nose or flat nose pliers, and a pair of wire cutters.  Do not use your best cutters for memory wire, it is very tough and will damage the blades. Instead use either sharp household pliers or specialist memory wire cutters.

Here’s how
  1. You will need two pieces of memory wire that consist of roughly a loop and a half – you will need to trim the wire later so don’t worry about getting both pieces exactly the same length.  Use either specialist memory wire cutters or household cutters with good clean blades.
  2. Turn a loop at one end of each of the pieces of memory wire using your round nose and your chain nose pliers.  Try and get the loops as small and as neat as possible.
  3. Thread a two-hole spacer bar onto both wires so that they are linked together.  Next start adding the beads; you will need to add beads to both wires working alternatively so that you are able to add in the other two-hole spacer bars to link the two wires together.
  4. On the first wire add two teal blue seed beads, one 6mm jet with AB Czech glass fire polished round, two teal blue seed beads, one 8mm aqua Czech glass fire polished round, two teal blue seed beads, another 6mm jet with AB, four teal blue seed beads and then add a two-hole spacer bar.
  5. On the second wire thread four teal blue seed beads, one 6mm jet with AB Czech glass fire polished round, two teal blue seed beads, one 8mm aqua Czech glass fire polished round, two teal blue seed beads, another 6mm jet with AB, two teal blue seed beads and then thread on the two-hole spacer bar already introduced to the other wire.
  6. The same sequence is then repeated for each wire, but with the introduction of a second 8mm aqua Czech glass fire polished round after the first – spaced by two teal blue seed beads.  Finish with a two-hole spacer bar to link the two wires, and then repeat the first sequence (with a single 8mm aqua Czech glass fire polished bead).  Add a two-hole spacer across the two wires.
  7. Repeat the sequence with the introduction of a second 8mm aqua Czech fire polished round, add a two-hole spacer and then repeat the first sequence with one 8mm aqua fire polished round.  Finish with a final two-hole spacer bar.
  8. Trim the wire ends to approximately 50mm, and then turn another small loop – you will find it easier if you cut and bend one wire at a time.
  9. To make the dangles, thread one teal blue seed bead, one 8mm aqua Czech fire polished round and one teal blue seed bead onto a 38mm silver-plated headpin.  Use your pliers to create a right-angle bend about 3mm above the top bead, then turn a loop and wrap the wire end two times around the ‘stem’ of the dangle. Trim the wire and use a 6mm jump ring to attach the dangle to the two-hole spacer bar. Repeat until you have created and attached six dangles.

15 - Fancy Fringes by Gill Teasdale

JillyBeads

This pretty bracelet only requires patience to string seed beads in this fancy fringed design. The pattern could be made even more interesting by threading another string of contrasting beads.

Gather these supplies
  • 19 6mm Stardust Silvery Spacer beads
  • 1 box 11/0 Ceylon Frosted Smoke Toho Seed Beads
  • 1 box 10/0 Blues Miyuki Delica Seed Beads
  • 1m length White Nymo Beading Thread
  • 2 3mm Silver plated Crimp Covers
  • 1 4 coil 6cm memory wire bracelet
  • 1 beading needle
  • Hypo Cement Glue, or similar
  • Pliers – Wire cutters, chain and round nosed

Here’s how
  1. Cut the memory wire Bracelet in half. Reserve one half for another project.
  2. Using round nosed pliers, grasp one end of the wire and roll outwards into a closed loop. (This will be hard, you will need to use quite a bit of force.)
  3. Tie the end of the Nymo securely onto the memory wire bracelet as close as possible to the loop. Apply a spot of glue to the knot and when dry cover with the crimp cover (squash it closed using the chain nosed pliers)
  4. Thread a stardust bead and 10 Ceylon Tohos. Thread the needle onto the Nymo, then pass it through the stardust bead, then thread on 15 Miyuki Delicas. Next, onto the memory wire, thread a stardust bead and 10 Ceylon Tohos. Thread the needle and thread through the Stardust and pull through so that the beads form a loop.
  5. Continue working like this, finishing with a stardust bead, until you have about 1.5cm of memory wire left. Pass the thread through the stardust, pull it fairly tight and knot it to the memory wire. Apply another spot of glue and when dry cover with a crimp cover.

25 - Memory Wire Cuff by Debbie Wood

Bead time

Plaiting Memory wire gives a really striking finish.  It also makes a very strong cuff that does not require a clasp. Smaller beads like seed beads work best in this project.

Gather these supplies
  • 10 grams Size 8 blue seed beads (designers own supply)
  • 10 grams Size 11 light blue seed beads (designers own supply)
  • 50 6.5mm Flower spacers (PB52-46)
  • 2 75mm Headpins (MPC23-5)
  • 12 Loops of Bracelet memory wire

Here’s how
  1. Cut 9 x 22cm sections of memory wire using Memory wire shears.

  2. NOTE: This will suit a small to medium size wrist.

  3. Use round nose pliers to turn a loop at the end of a section of memory wire. Thread on a mixture of seed beads and metal flower spacers and turn a loop at the end of the wire.  Repeat for all sections of memory wire.
  4. Add a 6mm bead to a headpin and thread through the Memory Wire loops. Secure at the other side by turning a loop.
  5. Divide the 9 MW sections into 3 x 3 and plait these together.  Note that the ends will vary in lengths and you could attempt to adjust the lengths.  However it is possible to push the remaining head pin through the varying lengths and secure as in step 3.
  6. The cuff is finished! You shouldn’t require a clasp, but you could add one with a jump ring attachment to the mid-point of the headpins if you wanted to.
