Top 20 stretchy strung bracelets

Updated: 24 November 2011

The Top 20 this month focuses on chunky strung bracelets in peacock shades threaded on stretchy elastic so they are ideal for last minute quick makes! As featured in the July 2011 issue of Beads & Beyond.

Peacock Bracelet

Designed By Beth Ratheram, Spellbound Bead Co

An elegant peacock feather motif bracelet inspired by Venetian flower techniques, made from small beads and wire and simply strung together on stretch magic.

The peacock feather inspired leaf shapes are each made individually using a similar method to Venetian beaded flowers where a central stem of beads is framed with concentric straps of further beads. The completed frames are then strung together on the Stretch Magic.

Gather these supplies
  • 7g chalk turquoise size 10 seed beads (A)
  • 7g silver lined teal size 3 bugle beads (B)
  • 7g metallic gold size 10 seed beads (C)
  • 8m 0.4mm gold plated wire
  • 0.5m 0.7mm stretch magic
  • 8 6mm blue crystal bicones (D)
  • 8 20mm gold round links (E)

Here's how
  1. Cut 1m of the 0.4mm wire. Make a temporary twist 10cm from one end (the top of the leaf), to stop the beads that you will be threading from coming off.  Thread on 3A, 1D, 1A.  Position the beads 2cm below the temporary twist and make a second small twist in the wire 2cm below the last bead. Continue twisting until the twist reaches the 1A bead just added, check you still have 2cm of wire between the temporary twist and the 3A beads. Bring the end of the wire out at a right angle from the stem holding the beads.
  2. Thread on 10A. Shape this strap into a curve to fit to one side of the 3A, 1D and 1A central stem. Cross the wire at the end of the curve over the 2cm of wire above the 3A beads. Wrap the wire around the 2cm wire spike at this end once so that it emerges on the other side of the central strand. Thread on another 10A and curl this strand around the other side of the central stem to cross over the wire twist at the bottom end of the leaf.
  3. Twist the wire a couple of times around the stamen made at the end of step 2 to complete the first frame around the central stem. Thread on 16C. Shape this strand back to the top of the leaf around the beads added in step 3, make a twist around the wire spike at the top of the leaf, emerging at the other side to thread on a further 16C and curl this strand back to the bottom end of the leaf and complete the frame by twisting the wire around the stem wire as before.
  4. Thread on 2C, 4B. Curl this strand back to the top of the leaf and twist the wire around the wire spike. Thread on 4B, 2C and curl this strand back to the bottom of the leaf and twist the wire around the stamen to secure.
  5. Now check you are happy with the way the leaf looks, easing the beads out a little if need be to make the leaf shape pleasing.
  6. The wire hoop (E) is now attached to the back of the leaf to hold the shape firm. As the leaf is more oval than the hoop you will have to manipulate the hoop to fit neatly behind the leaf so that it supports it on its outer edge.
  7. Use the ends of the wire to connect the hoop to the back of the leaf. Trim the wire stems at either end of the leaf motif to 6mm and fold neatly to the back of the leaf and secure. Finish your wire ends of securely and neaten by concealing inside adjacent beads.
  8. Make seven more leaf shapes the same as the first, or more if you wish your bracelet to be longer.
  9. Now thread your leaves together using the stretch magic. Lay the leaves out so that they are all facing the same direction. The top of each leaf will overlay the bottom of the next in the finished design.
  10. Fold the stretch magic in half and loop it onto the bottom end of one of the leaves just behind the seed bead decoration. Bring the two ends along the underside of the seed beads to emerge between the beads at the tip of the leaf to either side of the top centre. Now join to the next leaf by taking the strands from the top side of the first leaf to the underside of the second leaf pushing the ends through between the seed beads and the supporting hoop. Thread the two ends across the underside and out between the beads of the leaf tip as before.
  11. Repeat until all the leaves have been threaded.  Finish by joining the leaves into a circle with a double reef knot that can be made secure with a dab of glue or clear nail polish. You must allow the knot to dry thoroughly before trimming the ends back to neaten properly.

  3. Attach an Emerald bicone to the 33rd link with a wrapped loop and continue with this colour pattern adding a bicone with a wrapped loop to every 11th link as follows: Capri Blue to 44th, Purple Velvet to 55th, Emerald to the 66th, Capri Blue to the 77th, Purple Velvet to the 88th and, finally, an Emerald to the 99th link.
  4. To finish the beaded chain, open the last link of the oxidised blue chain and attach to the last link of the silver plated chain.
  5. Very carefully weave the elastic through the beaded chain by threading through each link of the silver chain. When passing through each silver link ensure that you also post through every third blue link. When you have come to the end of the beaded chain, pull the elastic tight so that you have a 7.5” bracelet and knot, twice, to secure. To further strengthen the bracelet; attach the last link to the first link of the silver plated chain and close and place a small amount of hypo cement or clear nail varnish to the knot and trim.

Saturn Shimmer

Designed by Jill Turton, Jillybeads

This bracelet contrasts chunky silver  with seed beads, utilising a multi stranded technique to add an out-of-this-world-splash of colour.

Gather these supplies
  • 5 jumbo saturns
  • 60 11/0 metallic iris purple ToHo seed beads
  • 60 11/0 teal silver lined ToHo seed beads
  • 90 cm 0.5mm Stretch Magic

Here's how
  1. Cut the cord into three equal pieces, putting two to one side for later, and mix the two colours of seed beads together. Tie a loose knot in one end of each of the cords, or clip on a bead stopper if preferred. Thread onto one of the cords 7 randomly chosen seed beads followed by a jumbo Saturn, then repeat four more times.
  2. Undo the loose knot (or remove the bead stopper) and wipe the cords with dampened finger to remove any dust or grease that would make the knot slip. Tie the two ends of cord together using a reef knot (left over right then through, then right over left then through), pulling the bracelet taut but not so as it goes rigid, and using up all the slack. Trim the ends, which will then be hidden inside the saturn.
  3. Take one of the other pieces of cord and thread on 7 randomly chosen seed beads, then thread the cord through the first Saturn, repeat, adding more seed beads and passing through all of the saturns, then tie the two ends together as in step 2.
  4. Repeat step three with the remaining piece of cord.

Dancing Peacock

Designed by Amber-Louise Kellett-Hillier, Crystals and Ice

A simple weave with a twist, created in peacock shades

Gather these supplies
  • 15” 7 strand Beadalon stringing wire in Bright
  • Bracelet size memory wire
  • 2 Silver plated memory wire end caps
  • Approx. 8g size 8/0 Miyuki seed beads in Smokey Grey Transparent Silver Lined (MI-8-0021-TSL)
  • Approx. 5g each of 3 colours of size 11/0 Miyuki Seed beads
  • Purple/Gold/Green Rainbow (MI-11-0356-F)
  • Green/Gold Transparent AB (MI-11-0179-TR)
  • Turquoise/Purple/Gold Rainbow (MI-11-0339-F)
  • 4m Navy Nymo Thread in Size D
  • Size 12 Beading needle
  • Memory Wire Cutters
  • Beading Glue/Super Glue
  • Flat nose/ Crimping Pliers
  • Side cutters

Here's how
  1. First take one of the end caps and secure it to the end of a coil of memory wire using your glue. Set aside to dry.
  2. String 12inches of size 8/0 seeds onto your length of Beadalon wire, these beads will provide the core of the weave, while the stringing wire will help to keep the core straight. Secure each of the ends with a crimp bead, leaving an inch to an inch and a half to allow the beads to move.
  3. Thread your needle with the Nymo thread. Leaving a 4” tail (you will use this to secure the weave later) thread the Nymo through the first 4 beads. Pick up one of each of the size 11/0 beads onto the Nymo, remembering the colour as you will need to pick them up in the same order each time. Thread the Nymo back up through the first four 8/0 beads. This should leave the size 11/0s sitting against the side of the core.
  4. Once again pick up your 3 size 11/0s as before and in the same order, then missing the first 8/0 bead thread the Nymo through the next four beads in your core (this would be the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th beads).
  5. Repeat the last step, stepping up one bead each time, ensuring your weave remains tight until you have reached the last set of four 8/0 beads.
  6. Using the end of the thread, weave back and fore through the first inch of beads in order to secure the weave (alternatively you can knot it off or heat treat the end of the thread). Repeat this process with the 4" tail you left at the beginning of the weave.
  7. Carefully cut the 7 strand beadalon to remove your weave.
  8. Thread the core beads of your weave onto your memory wire coil until the end meets the memory wire caps you secured earlier.
  9. Using your memory wire cutters cut the memory wire showing at the end of the weave. Take care to get it close to the weave (about 5mm so there will be no gap between the weave and the end cap) but also not to cut the weave at the same time.
  10. Secure the second memory wire end to the memory wire and leave to dry. Should you wish to make a longer coil simply increase the quantities of beads used.

  • 3 18mm Bronze Finish Metal Wire Ball Beads (00746-001)
  • 24 6mm Emerald Round Fire Polished Czech Glass Beads with AB (00060-001)
  • 22 6mm Jet Black Round Fire Polished Czech Glass Beads with AB (00053-001)
  • 26 6mm Amethyst Round Fired Polished Czech Glass Beads with AB (00050-001)

  • 2 8mm Aqua Round Fire Polished Czech Glass Beads (00061-003)
  • 2 8mm Emerald Round Fire Polished Czech Glass Beads (00059-002)
  • 0.3mm Beadalon Supplemax Illusion Cord (00276-001)
  • 0.5mm Stretch Magic Beading Cord (00368-001)

You will also need pair of cutters or scissors, and some glue or clear nail varnish to secure the knot on the bracelet.

Here's how
  1. First make up the six RAW (right angle weave) beads. You will need to make one bead using 12 of the 6mm emerald fire polished beads with AB, one bead using 12 of the 6mm jet black fire polished glass beads with AB, one beads using 12 of the 6mm amethyst fire polished beads with AB, and three beads using 12 each of the remaining beads, using a variety for each beaded bead. The 8mm beads will form the core of each RAW bead.
  2. Cut a 15cm to 20cm length of 0.3mm Supplemax. Thread on 3 6mm beads and position these in the middle of the thread. Hold both ends of the thread, one end in each hand. To the left hand end of the thread add another 6mm bead. Take the right hand end of the thread through the bead just added but in the opposite direction to the thread that already runs through it. Pull thread ends to create a group of four beads.
  3. Add one bead to the right hand end of the thread, and then another two the left hand end. Take the right hand end of the thread through the last bead just added but in the opposite direction to the thread that already runs through it. Pull thread ends to create a group of four beads.
  4. Repeat the above instruction.
  5. Finally add one single bead to either end of the thread. Hold your work to keep the tension, and thread the right hand end of thread from right to left through the bead first strung, this will be the one right at the bottom of your sequence. Pass the left hand end of the thread through the same bead, but passing from left to right. Pull both ends of the thread to create your beaded bead shape.
  6. Before knotting the threads insert an 8mm fire polished glass bead into the centre of your beaded net (can be any colour). Knot securely. I knotted the two ends together, then each end separately before trimming. Use a head pin to rotate each central bead so that the hole is visible.
  7. Cut a length of Stretch Magic and thread on the beads in this order: 1 peacock sparkle polymer clay bead, 1 bronze metal wire bead, 1 single colour RAW bead and 1 mixed colour RAW bead. Repeat with the remaining beads.
  8. Tie a tight square knot with the two ends. Stretch magic cord is slippery and some knots will just slide out, a square knot will be secure. For extra security do another on top, and add a drop of clear nail varnish or glue to the knot. Trim the thread ends.

  • 50cm navy mesh ribbon
  • 15 amethyst luster Indian glass drop
  • 15 aqua luster Indian glass drop
  • 15 teal luster Indian glass drop

Here's how
  1. Thread the beads onto the elastic alternating the colours and repeating the pattern. For an average wrist size, 15 beads per bracelet works well.
  2. Secure the bracelet by threading each end of the elastic through opposite ends of a crimp tube. Crush the crimp tube firmly with chain nose pliers and trim off any excess elastic.
  3. Make two more bracelets repeating steps 1 and 2 in exactly the same way.
  4. Gather the three bracelets together at the point where the crimps are and using the two lengths of mesh ribbon tie a bow around all three bracelets. Pull out the ribbon to create a frilly effect (this is also a cleaver way of hiding the crimps).

Clara Repeat Bracelet

Designed by Jodie Garrington, Spellbound Bead Co

A simple repeat of two bead types makes this an easy and elegant bracelet.

Gather these supplies
  • 14 14mm x 10mm large hole blue green ceramic beads (A)
  • 15 8mm x 6mm faceted turquoise rondelles (B)
  • 30cm 0.7mm Stretch Magic

Here's how
  1. Thread on 1A then 1B. Repeat until all of the beads have been used, finishing with 2B.
  2. Knot your thread securely and seal with a dab of clear glue or nail varnish.  Trim the ends back once this has dried and tuck the knot inside the last A bead threaded.
  3. If you would like your bracelet to have an exact repeat all the way around use one less B bead on the end.
